Principles for our use of social media

  • We are unafraid – We speak out on important issues without fear. We stand by what we say and are as clear as possible in how we say it.
  • We own our mistakes – Mistakes happen, we are only human, and it is important that we have a policy of retraction and public apology when things go wrong. Nothing goes unresolved.
  • We are positive and hopeful – We make sure to use positive and inclusive language, making sure no one is left behind or marginalised by our choice of language and that differing views are treated with respect.
  • We are calm, measured and collected – These days it is far too easy to go directly and quickly from outrage to tweet, especially with the rate at which outrageous things are happening in our world. We will think before we post, always. We will always consider nuance in all messaging.
  • We speak truth to power – We will never stray away from legitimate, truthful criticism of the powerful and elite. This will always have basis in fact provable with the evidence of your eyes and ears. Actions and policy. Never rumours, character attacks or libel.
  • We are laser focused on what unites us – While we may not always all agree on the route to get there, we remain focused on our shared destination of dignity, security, and justice for all, for a fairer and more equal society. We will not let internal or personal issues to take away that focus.
  • We cite our sources, always – In the world of politics, baseless claims are everywhere. We must strive to be better by backing everything up with verified sources. We invite everyone to think critically about everything we post and encourage critical thinking in what we post and the news media that we share.
  • We never hide behind grey areas – Just because it is not against the law, it does not make it right. Where standards and laws are loose or non-existent, we set the moral standard. We hold ourselves above just what is required. We will turn any grey area we encounter orange.
